City of the Dead

This walled enclosure on the eastern edge of the Trades Ward is the general cemetery for the City of Splendors, and its size nearly makes it a ward in and of itself. Many citizens visit the City of the Dead’s park-like lawns and white marble tombs during the day, for it is one of the few places dominated by greenery that the citizens of Waterdeep can share within the city walls.

The Watch helps keep the cemetery peaceful, and various members of the Guild of Chandlers and Lamplighters keep torches lit around and inside a number of tombs. The grounds are off limits after dusk, and the gates are locked. Nevertheless many shifty individuals still hold clandestine meetings after dark in the City of the Dead, despite the slight risk of undead escaping from a warded tomb to prowl the sprawling cemetery.

The area has served as a burial ground for centuries and in the Year of the Stranger the cemetery ran out of room. This prompted construction of a low wall around it and individual graves were replaced by magical tombs linked by portals, a solution of the mage Ancaster’s devising, to infinite demiplanes. Following this the high volume of undead prompted the construction of the higher walls seen today along with the magical locks and wards to ensure the unquiet dead remain within their confines.
